Singer/Songwriter Amy Therrien’s musical journey has been one of personal transformation and healing. Amy’s songwriting began as activism, playing her first written song in 1998 at the annual Take Back the Night in Portland, Maine, a rally against sexual assault and domestic violence. Amy worked in the Young Adult Abuse Prevention Program (YAAPP) as the Team Leader for over 5 years during which time she performed for various non-profit organizations and other venues throughout Maine. In 1999, Amy released Breathing, 9 original songs which received airplay on Maine radio stations. In 2003, Amy was named by the Portland Phoenix as “One of the Most Influential People in Portland, ME under 35” and in 2004 was named as “One of the Most Influential Women” in Portland, for her work in (YAAPP) of Family Crisis Services. During this time Amy was performing part time with her band, Del Sol, and writing for her upcoming CD, Fires Burning. In 2004, Amy developed SpiritSongs, a practice of individual sessions and workshops that inspires participants to explore their own voice as a tool for healing and empowerment. Shortly after the completion of Fires Burning in 2005, Amy moved with her husband to California and became pregnant with her son Noah. Amy has been a full time mom since Noah was born in 2006. She is also a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor and facilitates SpiritSongs. Amy is now most inspired by the mantras used in Yoga and her musical focus has turned to intentionally creating sacred space through music. Her performance at Women Create will be a blend of her original folk-rock and her “SpiritSongs”. Amy’s husband, Vaikko Allen, who has been a co-writer and musician on both of Amy’s CD’s will be joining her for the performance.
